Club EQ Album: March 2003 Challenge: Let's build up the User Library! Page 1

"We can never have too many blocks. Submit two copyright free blocks, preferably ones you designed, that are not presently in the EQ5 Block Library or in any EQ product. You may demonstrate how to use them in a quilt, but you don't have to. Submitting the two blocks will be terrific. Any kind of block is eligible. Please put a note on the Notecard to identify you as the designer and tell us something about why you designed this particular block."

Lover's Knot/Bow Foundation
Twisted Ribbon

This block was drawn for foundation piecing. The foundation printout needs to be re-organized when you print it out so the four corners of the block are pieced triangle units and the center square on point is divided into identical quadrants. Pair this with the Twisted Ribbon block for a border treatment or for an entire quilt..

Pair this Twisted Ribbon block with the Lover's Knot/Bow Foundation for a border or for a quilt layout. The blocks intersect beautifully! Rotate the block to get coloring effects. Work the coloring on the quilt for the twisted ribbon effect.

Sammy -
the spastic wonder dog &
Ollie - the silly kitty

Here are two appliqué blocks I designed from pictures of my best friend's crazy pets. I used the closed shapes in PatchDraw and just kept adding nodes and changing their functionality until I got the detail I wanted.

Sammy is her puppy. He likes to use my elbow as a chew toy. He's not that bright, but he makes up for it in personality. She sent me a picture of him where his feet were cropped out of the picture,... so I stuck him in an appliqué snow drift. He doesn't understand snow yet, so I thought it was appropriate.

Ollie, previously named "Molly" - until she took him to the vet (ha ha), is a playful little furball who likes to play fetch.

On-Point

I wanted to design a foundation pieced block and came up with this. Have tried several colourways and it makes neat quilts with just this one block and different colour ways

This a variation of my first block. Also wanted something to be foundation pieced and used as an alternate block.

Deborah Higgins
Double breast cancer ribbon
Hearts and tulips

I designed this to use as a block in a group quilt for a member diagnosed with breast cancer. I would like to "tweak" it so that rotations always meet at all points, but, hey, another day. . . . .

I THINK this is original! After seeing a gazillion blocks, it's hard to tell! I used this for my very first online swap. I love it that it has tulips, hearts, square in a square, Ohio star, etc, all combined. And best of all, PAPER PIECED!

Ellie Jacobs

This is an adaptation of a block I had seen somewhere. Actually it is one quarte of the block as I was hoping to paper piece each quarter at 12" to make a 24 medallion. Decided to try a large layout and use "Symmetry" tools and I like the results.

First Day of Spring

Keep it Simple is my motto for applique, or I would never get it done.

Designed on the first day of spring, 2003. The triangle points in the center will float so all will be perfect.

Crazy Patches
Grandma King's Star

I was fortunate to be able to get one of the very many blocks found in my Grandparent's house at their auction. This is one I have named for her. As far as I can tell, the fabrics were 1940's and I haven't been able to find another pattern like it. It is an odd size block, and after alot of trial and error, I was able to duplicate a close drawing of this treasured piece of my grandma's history in quilting. The block measures 12-5/8ths in size. I even have one or two of the cardboard templates she used to cut out this block. It was in a small box of misc. stuff. :)

Ring of Torches
Star Burst I

This block was designed by using the EQ Star 2 as a base. I then deleted a few lines and colored it in a new way. I like the way this block looks when used in the Variable Point Layout.

I change some lines and added some arc's to complete the ring. I thought this made an interesting block and it was fun to move and change some of the lines to come up with a new look.

Center Square

The tile design in my kitchen floor has always made me think it would be a nifty quilt block. I enlarged the grout lines to make them easier to piece --- Don't recall seeing this design anywhere in EQ or Blockbase. Enjoy!

No longer a simple Square in a Square! Wonder if it would be too much of a chore to piece this one?
