Club EQ Album: February 2005 Challenge: Games People Play! Page 1

Create a quilt to illustrate something about games. Don't violate copyright, but design something about your favorite game(s). This might be a great time to think of a "guy" quilt! Or commemorate those bridge games. Have fun. That's what playing is all about.

Marbles

My husband is a marble collector, so when the subject of designing a game quilt came up, I just HAD to do marbles. I drew some of them free hand, but some are ones I imported and traced. He has some that are much more beautiful, but some are just to complicated for me to even think about attempting to draw in EQ.

Tic Tac Toe

Inspired by Diane Hire's book, Quilter's Playtime. You can see the actual quilt that I made using this idea here.

I will be teaching a class using Diane's games at the Quilt Walk Festival in Panquitch, UT in June. More info at Quiltwalk

Help! Snakes Have Run Amuck in My Tic Tac Toe

X's 2, O's 3, Cat 4. And to think, this was supposed to look like a blank piece of paper with lopsided tic tac toe grids on it. You told us to play Barb! I did, and it was fun.

The Cat Always Wins

I put the Cat's Tail block on layer 1 and motifs of the rest on layer 2. I redrew 1/4 of the block and recolored it for the border. And I rearanged the cat's tail to make her a little skinnier.

Pentaminoes

Pentaminoes are the shapes that can be made by combining 5 squares. There are 12 shapes. These 12 shapes can be placed in a 6 X 10 rectangle in MANY different ways. I have used 9 different ways of arranging the 12 shapes.

Quilt-ominos

Instead of circles for the numbers on each block, I made quilt blocks -- the sixes have 6 patches, fives - 5 and so on. I designed this piece as a place to store the fabric game pieces. Each "quilt-omino" block could be made as a single piece and then attached to the base with hook and loop tape when not being used.

It's not a mystery but it's still puzzling ...

I really do turn some of my quilt designs into on-computer puzzles in real life, using Puzzlemaster software. Of course the 'real' ones have many, many more pieces. I also have an honest-to-goodness cardboard puzzle going at all times. I usually have two small bowls on the table, one for snacks and the other for a few puzzle pieces. And yes, I do occasionnally start a puzzle piece toward my mouth instead of an M'n'M.

The block being 'put together' is my own design, origianlly drawn for a Round Robin. It was the first of many 'interweaves' I drew. This one is named Andrea, after one of our nestmates.

Canfield CAN be won ... but not this time

OK, I admit it: I can waste a lot of time at solitaire, with real cards if someone shuffles them for me, or otherwise parked in front of the computer. One of my favorite versions is the two-deck 'Spider' but I didn't want to fiddle with that many cards.

The cards are my own drawings, all suits through 10. I still have the fun/work of drawing the face cards.

Red Rover

Houses from Block Base, Dog traced from internet clipart. I remember playing the game of Red Rover. 2 Teams of children holding hands would form two lines facing each other some distance apart. The teams take turns chanting.. Red Rover, Red Rover, let Debbie come over. Then you run across and try to break the hand hold of the opposite team. If you broke the hand hold, you were able to take someone back to the other team. If you did not, you became part of the team that called you over. The game ends when one team has only one person left. Not exactly sure where the term Red Rover comes from. Probably someone in the news of the day the same was first played.

Anyone for Tennis?

Hi, I am from Southport UK and I chose a tennis theme because I love tennis and thoroughly enjoy watching Wimbledon. I used to play years ago but the old bones object very loudly these days to any suggestion of playing!
