August 2007 Challenge: One Patch! (Page 1)

Design a quilt with any of the styles for a One Patch layout. You may color it as a charm quilt or a mosaic design. Or combine the one-patch with blocks set on Layer 2. Be creative with using this layout!

Hexagons colored as flowers on a vine are combined with strips of flowering vines.

Designed for the August, 2007, clubEQ challenge, One Patch.

I like putting appliques on a pieced background. Daisies, the bicycle rider, and the cobblestone background combine to illustrate a traditional American love song inviting Daisy to come for a ride on a bicycle built for two. Well, this is a unicycle, but we can imagine he might be dreaming of his girlfriend.

Used Layer 2 over One-Patch hexagons to create the ribbon effect and curved border from Auto Borders

Sierra Vista, AZ

I have no idea why this design works, but I feel like it does. Looking at the thumbnail on the notecard, it has a vaguely menacing feeling which is appropriate to Halloween.

I think it looks like some kind of ancient mask. I tried it in the pasel Bali prints and it had a completely different feeling.

Fernandina Beach, FL

I was playing around with these blocks and I felt like I was wandering around the oldest part of an ancient city where alleys led into courtyards that seemed to have no entry and house roofs were the only place to catch the sun.

Done in Southwest colors, with some circles appliqued on, it would remind you of the Anastasi Cliff Dwellers.

This design is also from a song.

Sizzling in the sun today and drizzling in the rain tomorrow. That's life in Texas!

Texas

I just kept seeing those hexagons like a beehive, which reminded me of Winnie the Pooh and his love of honey.

Maryland

The late summer sunsets on the prairies were the inspiration for this quilt. The geese are starting to come back on their way south and are looking for food and shelter for the night in the farmers fields.

I used the One Patch style"houses"as the background for this wallhanging. On Layer 2 I set some houses from the "Town & Country"CD.

So often, an EQ challenge is a time to just play and design quilts that are not meant to be sewn. But this is an easy, fun-to-sew quilt that I have made many times for a baby quilt.

The patch is drawn with custom glide and almost any angle works. With one patch and five colors, I have a little fun laying out the blocks. The rest is easy assembly line sewing.

Sometimes I add various colored sashing strips to one long side of the two-patch block for a different look.

Tumbler One patch gives an interesting side edgewhen the borders are deleted! This would make a great child's bed topper.

All of the default solids except black & white. Although, I may have missed a couple of the them. I have close to 1000 5" squares of different fabric that I want to make into a scrap tumbler charm quilt. While I may not use the colour arrangement from this one, it confirms that I like the scrappy look.
