September 2007 Challenge: Whole Cloth Quilts! (Page 1)

Design a quilt with just quilting patterns. This is traditionally called a "whole cloth quilt." Only quilting should be shown, for the quilting will create the design for the entire quilt.

Color the quilting lines with thread that has a good contrast with the background so they can be seen on the web site display. You may use different colored threads, but don't use colored patchwork or appliqué this time.

You _may_ use embroidery patterns, but they must be quilting designs.

Applique outlines and quilting stencil backgrounds were combined to create trapunto effect for quilting.

It was an iteresting challenge to see how stencils and applique elements from the EQ6 block library could be combined and edited to create a round quilt, such as this one, with only quilting designs.

This is my first month with a quilt program (EQ6). I was trying to create movement in the quilt with a strong use of diagonals and colour. I think some of the embroidery stencils may be hard to quilt so I may be eliminated from the competition. It just felt important to try.

I had never considered designing a whole cloth quilt before September's challenge was announced. This small quilt spotlights Cole, Fiona and Squeaky, our daughter's pets. After saving the EQ dog and cat stencils as jpegs, I digitized them in my Husqvarna Viking 4D Pro software and saved them as exp files. . Then I imported the dog and cat emboridey designs into my EQ project file Our Family Pets. What a great opportunity to stretch! Thanks, EQ!

I used the feather motifs and added parts of other blocks for the feathers, ribbons and scrolls, then added diamonds, resized and rearranged everything. This was a fun project! I've shown it in both redwork and bluework, 36" layout.

This was the hardest challenge I have ever done in EQ. Learned a lot and hope to continue making more.

This design came 'from scratch'.

Using the Freehand tool, I drew one-quarter of the quilt with a center element and border on the same stencil. Then it was easy to set four blocks (motifs) on the quilt worktable and rotate them.

This was a good exercise!

I started with the "Leaf Ring 2" stencil from EQ's library, then added the surrounding accents and channel quilting.

This is a one-block (motif) quilt. For anything larger than a wall quilt, it will be harder to print the stencil for use than with individual stencils. But this is necessary because the original stencil was a seven-sided one. It could be reduced to upper and lower quarters for smaller stencils however.

I prefer this two color version.

I wanted to add lines as well, but couldn't figure out how. Where are they hiding?

Standard pieced blocks were placed on Layer 3 of a custom set to create a stencil effect. The center medallion is a combination of two blocks.

I cannot figure out how to make a Whole-Cloth-Quilt, but I think this would be nice.

Austria

OK, I just had to piece in a shade darker green in the border to frame the wholecloth.

I actually made an applique quilt using this Kokopelli design -- fabulous!!!

I used leaves from the library. I draw the block for the quilted background. For a large wholequilt, I would probably add other leaf patterns. I found that leaves were a good September topic as Fall is coming quickly!

All the stencils come from the EQ library. I could see this working as the backside of a pieced autumn leaf quilt in autumn tints.

The hydrangeas are at their best in England at this time of year. I have a large one in my front garden that varies in colour from pale blue to dusky pink, and in the autumn the colours become even more mottled and intertwined.

Shadow trapunto would be fun with this wholecloth. This was my first focus with stencils.

The crosshatch stencil was a challenge as was the overlay of the birds. I would enjoy making this.

I created a motif and then used the wreathmaker to make the flower. For the Star I modified the Stars and Beams quilt stencil from the EQ library
