Design a quilt for setting star blocks with blocks that are not stars. This can be a two-blocker quilt or a multi-blocker quilt. The rule is you must use some of each --- stars and not-stars.

Designed for clubEQ challenge, March, 2008: Stars and Not-Stars -- use two blocks in a quilt layout, one that is a star block and one that is NOT a star block. The blocks are St. Louis Star Variation and Burgoyne Surrounded. St. Charles, IL USA |
Designed for clubEQ challenge, March, 2008: Stars and Not-Stars -- use two blocks in a quilt layout, one that is a star block and one that is NOT a star block. My star block is "Starry Path" and the not-star block is "Jupiter." St. Charles, IL USA |
EQ Stars and Not-Stars Challenge. I began with the Irregular Grid #15 layout from the library and inserted Greek Cross and Starlight Variation blocks. Williamsburg, VA |
EQ Stars and Not-Stars Challenge Although no longer an Ohio native, the Ohio Star is still one of my favorite blocks. As summer and the presidental election approach, the patriotic colors of red, white, and blue are plentiful. Williamsburg, VA |

I grew up 9 miles from Washington, DC and we used to go to the Smithsonian frequently. I always used to love to go the the Gems and Minerals section. The Hope Diamond was the main focus, but there were so many other jewels in fantastic settings as well as incredible mineral displays. This quilt reminds me of the simple granite displays as well as the brilliant Hope Diamond. Fernandina Beach, FL |
In the gems and minerals section of the Smithsonian there was a star sapphire that was my favorite. The brilliant star in the incredibly deep blue seemed like a miracle to me. In my mind I see iridescent blues in this quilt to mirror the shine and depths of that stone. The setting for the star sapphire was very simple, so I've chosen a very simple setting for this quilt. Star block with one other block. I used the Rolling Star with the Rolling Stone block. I like the secondary patterns. Davenport, IA |
I used a feathered star with a 'modified' rolling stone block. The rolling stone block still needs some work to smooth out some of the angles. I ran out of time. The two blocks together make an interesting pattern. Davenport, IA |

This is my favourite kind of quilt pattern - using two or more blocks to create secondary designs, and then using colour to create tertiary designs. Canmore, AB |

The non star block is "Washington's Puzzle". For best effect view the quilt with the outlines turned off. Canmore, AB |
This layout originally started from a wedding signature quilt that I made for my sisters wedding. I added a strip in the corners of the "not a star" block to match up with the points of the "star" blocks. I used the Random Recolor tool for the first time! Lots of fun! But hard to pick a favourite combination. Winnipeg, MB Canada |

This challenge was too easy! The hardest thing about it was choosing which design to send. The blocks used here are 'Nine Patch Star' and 'Silver Maple'. I used the 'Mirrored V Border' from EQ's library. Sunnyside, Washington |
This quilt uses the 'Ornate Star' and 'Shoo Fly' blocks from EQ's library. I played with several different star quilts from the layout library but decided that sometimes, simple is best. Please notice that the star used in my other quilt this month is 'Nine Patch Star'. Doesn't the star block in this quilt look like it should have that name instead? Sunnyside, Washington |
