May 2011 Challenge: Red and White! (Page 1)
Inspired by the recent very popular quilt exhibit in New York City, sponsored by the American Folk Art Museum, "Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts." Let's make a new collection of red and white quilts! Use only solid red and white to color the quilt. Do not reproduce a quilt from the exhibit, if you can help it. Design something new.

The block was originally published in the 1930s. This quilt design was _not_ among those exhibited at the American Folk Art Museum in March, 2011. St. Charles, Illinois, USA

I used one of my Rose of Sharon contest block designs for this red and white quilt. The clusters of circles colored all red reminded me of the lingonberries from Sweden that our family loves to serve with turkey, rice pudding or pancakes! I took a basket from the library and set that on layer 1 with the Set Auto Borders vine. I then modified a PatchDraw block to be a PatchDraw motif with less patches. I repeated the tulip head as a motif in Layer 2 floating along the vine. This looks best if you right-click the quilt and uncheck the options to outline the patches and blocks. |

I redrew and modified a library compass to create this new snowflake. I then colored it in white & cream and 2 shades of red. The layout is vertical strip quilt blocks, half drop, blocks. |

Red and white makes me think of candy peppermints so I created some calorie free ones for my quilt

Some blocks I choose again and again, both for sewing and for designing. This quilt uses four favorites or their variations. I started with the Horizontal-Center Medallions 25 from EQ's layout library and popped in blocks 'Five Patch Shoo Flt', 'Contrary Wife Variation', Double Irish Chain Block A', and 'Birds in Air'. This was a fun challenge. Sunnyside, Washington

I wondered what would happen if I used part of a clip art image to create another design. I happened to have a clip art fish handy so I traced a portion of the fin then repeatedly cloned and reoriented until I got some interesting designs. It turned out to be like eating peanuts -- just one more -- but I stopped when I hade drawn eleven. This quilt uses the blocks Fish Fin 8 through 11. The sashing block is 'Stripes Bordered Outside 6' from EQ's sashing library. Just think: if I'd had a clip art hippopotamus handy, I'd have totally different designs. I'd also have the stress of desiding how to spell the plural of hippopotamus for the title. Sunnyside, Washington

Guildford, England This combines two things that a love - the red and white combination and a feathered star block. As the colour palate is so restricted I thought a fairly intricate block would be a good option.
|
Guildford, England The Ohio Star and Thrifty block are both from the EQ library. This is a very traditional setting, and I have no idea if this combination turned up in the exhibition, but I am sure there were probably similar designs.

Changed the on point layout so the corner setting blocks were split. |
Started with 1 block center then added borders to size. Adjusted border types to make the spiral effect. Rotated tulip blocks to align spiral spokes. I used the tulip block as it more closely resembled an old pomegranate block my granddaughter gave me for remembrance of my AQS Des Moines, IA entries in 2008 and 2010.

In this two block quilt, the corner and centre blocks appear as stars and the two blocks form interesting secondary designs. |
In this quilt, I used the same blocks in the same layout but reversed the colours in the corner and centre blocks and it ended up masking the star and formed a totally different look to the quilt. |
The theme of Swiss flag was suggested by a friend. So here my variation on the Swiss flag. |
I used blocks from Eq library to make this quilt. |

Washington State USA I designed the birds and flowers for the bird block and also the butterflies. The scroll block is the EQ block: Scroll with Thorns and Diamonds. I designed the corner scroll block.
|
Washington State USA I made connecting pieces for a continuous flow of the EQ block Celtic Patch 2.
|
For the body of the quilt, I set the snail trail blocks and star blocks on point. The border is another, simpler star placed on point. I played with the coloring until I got what I liked. |
