Electric Quilt 5 Frequently Asked Questions

I am having trouble installing EQ5. Any suggestions?
There are 2 installations on the EQ5 CD which both install the same program (just in different ways).

The first installation (which starts up automatically each time you insert the CD) works for about 90% of customers on Vista and XP.

The second installation is in a folder called "Install2" on the CD, and works for 100% of customers on Vista and XP. Here's how to start Install2.

  1. Insert the EQ5 CD.
  2. a)If a box pops up and you are given the option to "run setup.exe" or "browse the CD to view files", choose to Browse to view the files and skip to step 3.

    b) If the installation starts up automatically and you don't get that option box, click Cancel, then Exit Setup to stop the default EQ5 installation. Then go to START > Computer. Right-click your CD drive and left-click Explore.
  3. Double-click the Install2 folder.
  4. Double-click the little blue-screen computer called "setup" or "setup.exe". It is an application file.

This will start the Install2 installation and you should be fine now.

Help, I get "invalid file name" whenever I try and save a project. How can I save my project?
Your C:\My Documents\My EQ5 folder may have gotten marked as read-only.

  1. Uninstall EQ5.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Install EQ5.
  4. During the installation, you're asked where you want the program to go. If you don't want it at C:\Program Files\Electric Quilt Company\EQ5 click BROWSE. Change it to LetterOfTheDriveYouWant:\PathYouWantWithSlashesBetween\EQ5 and click OK.
  5. Next, you're asked where you want your files and user libraries to go. Click BROWSE. Change it from C:\My Documents\My EQ5 to C:\Documents and Settings\UserAccountName\My Documents\My EQ5 and you should be ok.
  6. Go through the rest of the installation.
  7. Restart your computer.

If that doesn't help, check out these other possible solutions.

I am not seeing any projects listed in under "Existing Projects" on the Open an Existing Project tab. How do I get them to appear?
Your project helper is looking in the C:\My Documents\My EQ5 folder, but projects are being saved to C:\Documents and Settings\UserAccountName\My Documents\My EQ5.

I have XP and EQ5. Why doesn't it work when I try to copy to the Windows clipboard?
You have probably followed our suggestion to change the compatibility mode of EQ5 in XP, to avoid possible problems that a few users had experienced in XP. This seems to remove the ability to copy to the Windows clipboard in EQ5. So to be able to copy to the Windows clipboard, you'll need to change the compatibility back to normal. To do this, right-click on the EQ5 desktop icon on the Windows desktop, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, click on the checked box "run this program in compatibility mode for" to remove the check. Click Apply. Click OK.

I'm making a Snapshot. But when I try to copy and paste it into Word it doesn't work. Why?
If you have XP, and followed the instructions on the gold sheet of paper that came with EQ5 to set your EQ5 to work under Win 98/ME compatibility mode, that is the cause of the cut and paste problem.

If you want to cut and paste a snapshot, you'll need to set this back.

RIGHT-click on the EQ5 icon on the desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab and UNcheck the box beside, "Run in Compatibility mode for:" Once you uncheck that box, it will go back to running in XP and you will be able to Copy to Clipboard again.

(This solution was suggested by user Patti Anderson.)

Help, why does my notes field in the notecard only let me type one line?
If you have XP, and followed the instructions on the gold sheet of paper that came with EQ5 to set your EQ5 to work under Win 98/ME compatibility mode, that is the cause of only one line problem.

You can try setting it in Windows 2000 compatibility mode to see if that makes a difference.

I have problems coloring in EasyDraw. I will click in a color and the program crashes.
Try following the instructions on the fluorescent sheet of paper that came with EQ5 to set your EQ5 to work under Win 98/ME compatibility mode. If you can't find that sheet, here are the directions:

  1. Go to your desktop.
  2. Right-click with your right mouse button on the EQ5 desktop icon and choose Properties.
  3. Click the Compatibility tab.
  4. Put a check in "run this in compatibility mode for"
  5. Drop the box down to "Windows 98/ME"
  6. You may want to put a check in "disable visual themes"
  7. Click Apply, then OK

If you do not have a compatibility tab, try going to START - My Computer - C drive - Program Files - Electric Quilt Company - EQ5. Then start at step 2 by right-clicking on the EQ5 application icon and choosing Properties. The rest of the directions will be the same.
