Electric Quilt 6 Frequently Asked Questions

My installation stops and says I don't have the right resolution. What do I do?
The EQ6 box says that the program requires 1024x768 resolution or higher. Your resolution is set too low.

  1. Click START > Control Panel.
  2. If the blue bar on the left says "Switch to Classic View", click that link.
  3. Find Display in the list and double-click on it.
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. Under Screen Resolution on the bottom-left, slide the slider to the right so it is at least 1024 x 768 pixels.
  6. Click Apply, then OK.
  7. Retry the EQ6 installation.

Shortcut: Skip steps 1-3 and just right-click an empty space on your Desktop and left-click Properties, then start from 4.

Error 1305, 1311, or 1335. "Error reading from file file path+name. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it."

This error can be caused by dirty media, CD-ROM read issues, or problems with memory allocation.

Here are a few suggestions to help troubleshoot this problem:

  • Examine the CD and clean it if necessary.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Empty the Temp folder. START > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk CleanUp. Choose C drive. Check only Temporary Files. Click OK.
  • Disable all anti-virus software and system utility programs, including all their services. (Right-click all the mini-icons near your clock and turn them off or exit out of as many as possible.)
  • Copy the entire contents of the CD to a folder on your hard drive, and then perform the installation from the hard drive instead of the CD drive.
  • Make sure that the installation has access to an adequate amount of space for installing. To do this, check the CD-ROM local security policy and confirm that it is set up to allow you and the install program full access to the CD ROM drive. For directions on how to do this, please consult Microsoft's method 2:

When I installed the EQ6 Upgrade I thought it would change EQ5. Am I supposed to have both EQ5 and EQ6 as two programs?
EQ5 and EQ6 are two separate software programs. If you got the EQ6 Upgrade CD, it simply means that you got a discount on your EQ6 program because you were a registered EQ5 user. It also means that EQ5 must be installed on your computer in order for the EQ6 Upgrade to load.

Neither EQ6 or the EQ6 Upgrade changes or deletes EQ5. If you have the EQ6 Upgrade installed, you may uninstall EQ5 from your computer (although it’s a small program).

  • Your EQ5 projects will still remain on your hard drive and can be used in EQ6. Projects can be found in the My EQ5 > PJ5 folder.
  • Your User Libraries will NOT remain on your hard drive if you uninstall. If you saved items in them, will need to be backed up before uninstalling. User Libraries can be found in the My EQ5 > User folder.
  • The My EQ5 folder is either in My Computer > C drive > My Documents or My Computer > C drive > Documents and Settings > Your User Name > My Documents.

But you must keep your EQ5 CD, and the EQ5 serial number. You will need both should you ever need to reinstall the EQ6 Upgrade, or install the EQ6 Upgrade on a new computer. Your EQ6 Upgrade CD is useless without EQ5, as it will not install unless EQ5 is already installed on the computer. Should you lose the EQ5 CD, purchasing a new one will be prohibitively expensive, and we want to make sure you never need to purchase an EQ5 CD since you already own one.

I do not have an internet connection. How can I install and activate?
In order to activate and register, each computer you install on must be connected to the internet at least once. This is one of the system requirements. Please contact technical support to discuss your options if you are unable to connect that computer.

I often work on my computer outside, when it’s not connected to the Internet. Will this work with EQ6?
Yes. The computer only needs to be connected to the internet for installation, activation and registration. After EQ6 is completely installed, EQ6 does not need to be connected to the internet ever again.

Why do I get a "failed to create empty document" message whenever I try to start the program?
The Failed to create empty document message indicates you did not get a good, complete installation of EQ6.

Please try this:

  • Uninstall EQ6, then
  • Restart your computer (Be sure to log on to the computer as the computer user that will be using EQ6.)
  • Reinstall EQ6.

IMPORTANT: If you do not use the suggested installation paths, make sure you put EQ6 in a folder, but not the same folder as EQ5. This is important, they each like to have their own space.

If you installed EQ6 on top of EQ5, you may also want to uninstall and reinstall EQ5 as well, then use the suggested installation paths during both installations or put them in separate folders of your choice.

Installing EQ6 on Vista, I got an error 42, could not initialize. What should I do?
This error 42 is Vista’s way of asking you for more permission. Here’s what to do:

The short way:

  • Hold down your keyboard SHIFT key and Right-click the EQ6 shortcut on your desktop.
  • Choose Run As, or Run..., or Run As Administrator from the menu.
  • Allow this, then continue on with the activation.

The long way:

  • Click START > Computer.
  • Double-click on your local disk C drive.
  • Double-click these folders: Program Files > Electric Quilt Company > EQ6.
  • In the opened EQ6 folder you will see two red and white files.
  • Right-click on the red and white EQ6 file that is an application file.
  • Choose Run as administrator.
  • Choose to Allow this and then continue with the activation.
